The quality on the tapes isn't the greatest quality. That's because I did a quick and dirty dump and the audio file is compressed. I went back and reviewed the original, high quality tape of mine and I found one gem: 22 minutes, 30 seconds on side B.
They're going through the savings by area for the Renewal Plan. They're going in exactly where the 55 million in savings comes from.
A snippet from the audio file: "... reduction in Uptown academic units 6.1.."
There you go. That's exactly how much they're saving from axing engineering. $6.1 million per year. Actually, to be completely accurate, that's how much Tulane is saving by axing 6 out of 8 engineering programs, exercise science, the 2 programs in the B-school and 27 out of 45 graduate programs.
Earlier, they talk about the total budget being $585 million.
Cowen has made engineering out to be this huge drain on the university that threatens the survival of the entire university. Saving the "Uptown academic units" would increase Tulane's budget by 1.0319742852%. (6.1/[6.1+585]=0.010319742852)
How does it feel now that you know Cowen doesn't think you're worth 1% of the budget? That's what we're fighting about. 1%!!!!
I'll see about posting a higher-quality audio file. Does anyone have a computer with a direct audio input?
PS- I got into a fair amount of trouble for taping the senate meeting. I had some very rude emails directed my way by certain people in Gibsion Hall. I'm tempted to post them. I actually consulted with a lawyer because they insinuated that they might sue me. Fortunately, under Louisiana law, I'm well protected. Suing a student would be a wonderful PR move, too. The minutes to the meeting will be public soon (around 2 weeks) anyway. That being said, I don't want to press my luck too far. I'm sure I've already said something somewhere on this forum that's going to get me in trouble somehow.
Check this website for the minutes:

To anyone in Gibson Hall reading this: please don't sue me. Please. _________________ Clay Kirby

I think your ratio is off a bit - you have to count all undergrad components that are dumped as part of the 6.1 savings - that includes combining TC and Newcomb - they're part of Uptown academic units unless there's something on the tape I'm missing. |

That's the sheet he was reading from. This is the outline of the savings from the renewal plan. It was passed out at the meeting. _________________ Clay Kirby

The full financial report has finally been posted.
Why are they shrinking the return rate from the endowment if we're in a state of "financial exigency?" Anybody have a clue what's the dollar figure related to that decision (5.6%-5%)? Assuming an 800 mil endowment, that's a 4.8 million dollar loss (per year). That's the majority of the savings from engineering. Just throwing it out there. _________________ Clay Kirby
