Richard Whiteside joined Tulane 13 years ago as Dean of Admissions and is now, in addition, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Institutional Research. I was fortunate enough to travel with him for several years doing admissions work. I learned a great deal from him. He's been great for Tulane. Admissions was formerly run by the "seat of the pants" business model. Dean Whiteside brought quantitative analysis into the picture, and we all benefited from it. I didn't like all his decisions, but they were all made in the interests of bettering Tulane. And the one I disliked the most turned out to be great for the School of Engineering.

VP Whiteside is leaving to do private consulting, announced by Scott. There is an article in TP today about him leaving, it closes with the statement that the incoming class for fall 06 has 948 students, down 37% from previous years.

This makes it clear that making Dean/VP Whiteside is going to be Scott's scapegoat on the class size issue. When I discussed it with one administrator, he said I was very perceptive. Nope, just in tune with Scott's methods and ways.

If you'd like to do something appreciative for someone who probally made a difference in getting you to Tulane, drop him a note and say thanks for the tour you took when you visited Tulane, the stayover in the dorm, the free lunch at Bruff, your scholarship, your acceptance into Tulane, and the standing of Tulane's admissions standards in national comparions. Part of Tulane's reputation is its admission standards, so when you job hunt, think of VP Whiteside. He's at Whitesid@Tulane.edu, at least for a while.
