This is my response to a Hullabaloo article "Cowen: Future Bright"-Admission prepared to keep Tulane "hot", I posted it on their web site, www.thehullabaloo.com.
Ian Watt, Tulane Admissions Counselor said, "To redevelop a city, you need people who can think critically”, isn’t it ironic that Tulane’s view of what it takes to “redevelop” New Orleans does not include Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers. Tulane could have be at the center of the necessary “critical” engineering thinking to do such things as academic oversight of the Army Corps of Engineers and Levee “One” District projects. Tulane’s view seems to imply that it takes only social programs to redevelop a city and NOT critical infrastructure such as electricity, communications, better pumping stations, water and drainage and levees for coastal defense from future storms. To improve this infrastructure it takes new and “critically” thinking Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, of which will have to be trained elsewhere since Tulane has eliminated these programs as part of their shortsighted Renewal Plan. |
