It disturbs me that this renewal plan is supposed to be the "best" plan for Tulane. This is supposed to be utilitarian, in that the greatest good is being done for the greatest number. But in doing the greatest good, you first have to make sure that nobody gets hurt. Isn't that the first priority?
I mean I think Cowen seems to care more about his future Business students than his current Engineering students. I believe a president's first obligation is to his current students, not to this school's reputation and not to his future students. If you can't satisfy the needs of current students, then you have failed.
Maybe a stronger Business and Liberal Arts school is not the answer. Maybe the best decision would be to allow the Engineering School to live and slowly return the entire university to "national prominence." Besides, who even says were not one of the best in the nation...
