I just got word from a friend in the Uptown area that Lusher has stopped taking applications from locals that aren't affiliated with Tulane or Loyola. That's right, even if you're a block from Lusher and in the school's district, you can't go to Lusher anymore.

That answers the question about Cowen also ruining Lusher.

PS- I went to Lusher and will always value the incredible education I recieved there. I am incredibly appreciative about the visits to the wetlands and what they did to help me understand the enormous engineering problems facing New Orleans.

I think that might be something else worth informing the Times-Picayune about. We could end up with a good article in there about what Cowen is not doing for New Orleans, and get a lot more locals to voice their opinions about the administration.

This conflicts with the news I heard, as well as the FAQ on the Lusher website. Lusher will still honor the geographic district, although those outside the geographic district who are not affiliated with Tulane/Loyola/Dillard/XULA are outta luck.

I actually now think that the Uptown friend of mine is just out of the district. Keep in mind, though, the district is drawn to only include the areas around the Universities. You can be two blocks from the school and the school isn't your neighborhood school, but places on the other side of St. Charles and the Universities are in the district. It's very peculiar.

Which is why I created a map of the (pre-K) Lusher district: http://morrisxp.cstcis.cti.depaul.edu/lushermap.gif

From the http://www.lusherschool.com website FAQ (registration required):

Q: I bought a home in the district so my child could attend Lusher next August. Will my child still have a spot then?
A: Plans are still to honor the district in August, 2006.

AFAIK, they aren't taking any more applications because they are full for this semester.
