The mission statement does have a second part (helping engineering in New Orleans). Along that thread, I've got a few things to post that I've learned as a freshly-minted engineer.
Here are a few things every engineer (or at least all ME's) should have in their library:
Lindeberg's PE Reference Book - Great for both preparinig for the PE and for daily reference. Lindeberg also makes a good one for the FE Exam. The 10th edition is still pretty up to date and can be found for next to nothing.
(ME):

Crane Technical Paper 410- You aren't an ME without Crane.

Surface Operations- Find this used. It's a good primer to the oil industry.

The Prize - Great, non-numbers oriented primer to the oil industry. Won the Pulitzer.

Pocket Ref- Incredible amount of information in a tiny package. Keep it with you when you evacuate. Has everything from Alloys to Welding and everything in between. Must have.

What went wrong? - If there's any possibility that a project you are working on could turn into a SUPERFUND site, you should read this to inspire you not to screw up.

The Storm (Ivor Van Heerden)- The definitive Katrina account, as far as the facts are concerned. Incredible. Must read.

Other Useful Books:
Cameron Hydraulic Data
Pressure Vessel Handbook
Good Websites:
www.govliquidation.com - If you have to do any procurement, you can occasionally find real steals here. Cool site to browse, too.
http://www.onlineconversion.com/ - Convert everything
http://www.american.edu/TED/class/all.htm - List of case studies of disasters. You have to sort through things, but it's worth reading.
* Try to get a hold of a good, complete Pipe Spec. It'll come in handy. Shell's "Schedule Q" is good, but it's hard to get a hold of.
I'll add more in a little while. _________________ Clay Kirby
